She’s immediately falling for Willow, but in order to win her over, Nozomi has to simultaneously comfort Willow over her breakup while befriending Willow’s ex’s current girlfriend.

The protagonist Nozomi goes to California to spend the summer with her uncle and that’s when she finds herself thrust in a love triangle/square. I was looking for a light read to kick off my weekend, and this book delivered.

Love & Other Natural Disasters by Misa Sugira I truly appreciated the level of detail the author went into when talking about each type of food or dish, especially when talking about cuisines from different countries. Lila’s dynamic with her family (naming her aunties the ‘Calendar Crew’ was hilarious), love triangle with Amir and Jae, her sweet friendship with her best friend Adeena, and her passion for baking was such a joy to read. I read this book in one go, just like the first book in the series, ‘ Arsenic and Adobo.’ I related to Lila (the protagonist) in so many ways: her love of food, coffee, family, friendships struggling to reconcile her different identities pressure to find her next big ‘thing’….and so much more. I related to the memoir in parts when she talked about her adoptive and biological families, sense of belonging, being Asian American….and teared up when she talked about the search to locate her biological family and discovered family secrets. Through her beautifully written words, Nicole Chung sheds light on the transracial adoptee identity, something that I will never claim to fully know or understand, but want to gain a greater context.
